Catherine Hodges Shortlisted for National Business Award

Catherine Hodges of TONI&GUY in Bath is celebrating after being shortlisted for Franchisee of the Year, sponsored by Great Lengths, at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2023.

Widely regarded as one of the industry’s most prestigious events, the awards recognise the names that have achieved business brilliance, helping uphold Britain’s reputation as a world leader in hairdressing expertise.

Catherine reached the finals after submitting an attention-grabbing entry, detailing the skills and experience that have contributed to their career success to date. Following an intensive judging process, she will now attend the 25th British Hairdressing Business Awards, held this year on Monday 3 July 2023 at London’s Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.

Catherine says: ‘I still can’t believe it! The awards are so respected across the industry, so just to reach the finals is a huge honour. I’m up against some incredible competition but I just hope that the judges see my drive and passion. Winning the award could change my life – I’m keeping everything crossed!’

Jayne Lewis-Orr, Executive Director of the British Hairdressing Business Awards says: ‘HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards are an annual celebration of business acumen, and the people and companies going the extra mile to ensure that creativity and commercial success go hand in hand. Once again, our judging panel was overwhelmed with the standard of entries. Catherine should feel incredibly proud to have achieved that and finalised alongside such impressive talent.’

A total of 17 trophies will be awarded at the event, which was launched in 1998 and has previously honoured names including Trevor Sorbie, TONI&GUY, Sophia Hilton, Colin McAndrew and Casey Coleman.

New Year’s hair from inside to out!

The last of the turkey is now a curry in the freezer. We’ve hardly moved off the sofa for two weeks. Yep…we’re primed and ready for New Year’s Resolution territory. And, unsurprisingly, our top goals involve looking better, feeling better, and dropping a dress size…even if it’s just to return us back to where we were prior to December 1st! (I’m not sure which is worse, lockdown or too many parties?)

But in these dark days, there’s a light on the horizon. Earlier last year (it still seems strange to say that about 2022), while studying nutrition in trichology, I was delighted to learn that carbohydrates are good for hair growth! Let’s all take a moment to savor that, shall we?

As you might imagine, this was naturally an invitation to enjoy more bread and pastries than I’d eaten for ages, and to put on a few pounds. To be honest, there are simply times when we take want we want from the information we have and run with it !!!

But there’s no doubt that one of the most common causes of diffuse hair loss (general shedding and thinning all over) that I see with my clients crash dieting – especially Keto-type very low-carb dieting. You may lose a stone….plus half of the density of your hair at the same time.

The pounds take moments to put on, and weeks to take off, but the hair will take years to regrow.

So what happens here? As we drop the carbs from our diet, our energy diminishes, our very clever bodies prioritize our main organs and the blood supply to our hair growth is dramatically reduced. More hair rests, less hair grows, and before you know it your ponytail is half the thickness it was a few months back!

So here’s the plan: eat healthily, shed a few pounds but none of those luscious locks. Firstly, hair is hungry, and skipping meals is a no-no for optimum locks, remember how much hair we grow each day? (it’s around 0.5 mm per hair per day. With 100,000 hairs on an average head, that’s around 50 meters of growth a day.)

And all that growth needs fuel. Enjoy just enough carbs (we are allowed!) plus plenty of veg, especially the leafy green stuff and as much if it as we want. As 70% of us are low in iron, this one is very important – as are foods rich in vitamins D and B12 (good news here…it turns out your turkey was a decent source of B12 so you’ve made a start!) And do fully use the ‘2 boxes of eggs per household‘ rule that supermarkets currently apply. Eggs are one of the best hair foods.

And with all this washed down with plenty of water and a little less alcohol, I believe we can keep our existing wardrobe and have beautiful-looking hair.

To holiday or not to holiday? That is still the question. We hairdressers are renowned for our holiday chit-chat – not least because everyone tends to plan hair appointments around travel plans and various holiday celebrations. That said, the emphasis has changed a little in the chair of late. Not so much ‘where should we go?’ as ‘should we go at all?’ What with the fast changing traffic-light system, the concern over self-isolating and the near certainty of expensive testing, staycations for many are looking better and better…if only everyone’s garden furniture would arrive. But thankfully, home or away, we all still want to look good and the salon is thriving. And, besides the latest style trends and techniques, so are other topics of conversation.

Because it appears we’re also pretty clued up on current affairs. A fair representation of concerns can be summed up in two questions on everyone’s lips: ‘Do you plan to keep safety procedures in place beyond freedom day?’ And: ‘Is the country opening up too soon?’ Sure, many are encouraged by the recent drop in Covid cases, some a little more hopeful than others. The range of experiences is as diverse as our clients. And as hairdressers we do what we’ve always done… we listen and we care.

One of the issues we’ve had to confront as a salon is to mask or not to mask. We have 27 utterly professional staff keen to know and follow salon policy. Naturally in a perfect world (which it never is!) we’d all prefer not to be wearing masks for eight hours a day. Anyway, I was gearing up to tell them when our receptionist Nikki happened to be placing a weekly order for products. She waltzed into the staff room, a beacon of smiling light as usual, and asked straightforwardly, “Cath, am I still ordering masks?” Everyone went quiet and looked at me. “Yes,” I replied. “Get ten boxes.” Sorted. While we’d all like to get back to lip reading while the hairdryer is going, we had no intention of dropping our guard now.

After getting past the initial space suits and visors last year, it’s been a total pleasure looking after our clients to a higher standard than ever, and the sighs of relief under masked faces when we reassure them of our safe environment is worth every effort!

Since lockdown ended, I and the rest of the staff have racked up a few cycles of six-week appointments plus quite a few late-night haircuts to catch up. We’re all due a bit of a break but even those staycations are not without hassle. Cornwall in the camper van, I thought, just the job. But even the most cursory Google of things to do and places to eat throws up much the same message…’services limited due to Covid’

Back in the salon, how lucky we are that creativity isn’t limited…no matter how hard Covid tries to beat us. As we discovered when a few (extremely frustrated, apologetic, vaccinated and tested) sought-after stylists found themselves isolating due to the pingdemic.

At the best of times, fitting in clients can be a work of art. Amending and rescheduling needs divine inspiration, especially when you absolutely do not want to use that dreaded phrase ‘services limited due to Covid’.

Everyone was extremely understanding but, let’s face it, if someone messes with you hair appointment it’s pretty disappointing. After all, it could be your holiday hair!

So, until the next ping, we can offer a full helping of style inspiration, new looks and summer colours, (whether you’ll be showing it off in Greece, on the beaches of Cornwall or with your feet in the paddling pool in the garden).
